Bad Bunny’s Debí Tirar Más Fotos won Album of the Year at the 68th Grammy Awards on Sunday (Feb. 1), the first Spanish-language album ever to take the night’s top prize. Harry Styles, who beat Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti in the category three years ago, presented it to him, Billboard noted. He needed several seconds, hand over his eyes, before he walked up.
He had already won Best Música Urbana Album and, for “EoO,” Best Global Music Performance. Accepting the big one, he spoke mostly in Spanish, then switched for one sentence. “I want to dedicate this award to all the people who had to leave their homeland, their country, to follow their dreams,” he said. His earlier speech that night was the one that stopped the room. He would headline the Super Bowl halftime show a week later.

Kendrick Lamar won five Grammys, per Billboard, lifting his career total to 27 and passing Jay-Z’s 25 and Ye’s 24 to become the most-awarded rapper in Grammy history. Record of the Year went to “Luther,” his duet with SZA, making him the fourth artist and first male solo act to win it two years in a row. It also took Best Melodic Rap Performance, and he added Best Rap Album for GNX, Best Rap Song as a cowriter on “TV Off” and Best Rap Performance as a featured artist on Clipse’s “Chains & Whips.” No rap album has won Album of the Year since OutKast’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below 22 years ago, Billboard added.

The Record of the Year moment will be replayed all week. Cher, presenting after a surprise lifetime-achievement award, opened the envelope and announced, “The Grammy goes to Luther Vandross!” Rolling Stone called it an instant classic, and Lamar turned it into a tribute. He said the sample clearance for Vandross and Cheryl Lynn’s “If This World Were Mine” came only on the condition that they didn’t curse on the record.

Olivia Dean won Best New Artist over Leon Thomas, Addison Rae, Lola Young, Alex Warren, KATSEYE, the Marías and Sombr. She is the ninth female solo artist in a row to take the category, Billboard noted, and her middle name, Lauryn, comes from Lauryn Hill, who won it in 1999. “I’m up here as a granddaughter of an immigrant,” she said.
The rest of the night belonged to repeat winners. Billie Eilish and Finneas became the first three-time Song of the Year winners for “Wildflower,” and Lady Gaga took Best Pop Vocal Album for Mayhem. Lola Young won Best Pop Solo Performance for “Messy,” announced by presenter Charli xcx, and Steven Spielberg completed his EGOT with a win for best music film. She wrote her comeback single the morning after.
Trevor Noah hosted for the sixth time. As Rolling Stone put it, the night felt like “a concert where we give out awards,” and ICE Out pins were everywhere.
