Lana Del Rey’s husband may have the best part in Grand Theft Auto VI’s radio lineup, and he barely has to act. Jeremy Dufrene, an airboat captain in real life, turns up on the country station Back Country Radio as Mud Dog Mike: roving reporter, swamp meteorologist and airboat captain.
He’s the deep cut. On Thursday (Oct. 8), Rockstar Games named six of the game’s radio stations and the artists hosting them in character. Bad Bunny and RaiNao run the Latin station Cocoteo FM, Del Rey and Morgan Wallen take Back Country Radio, and Burna Boy shares AfroBank FM with the selector Palms Trax. Robyn and the model Alex Consani bring back Flash FM, Trick Daddy and Trina spin Dirty South Classics, and Slayer’s Kerry King and Tom Araya run the metal station The Chamber 106.6.
Music has always been half the point of Grand Theft Auto, and Rockstar is billing this as “the biggest and widest-ranging selection of in-game radio and podcasts yet.” For Burna Boy, it closes a loop. His “Killin Dem” played on GTA V’s iFruit Radio, and he made “Gettin’ Money” for GTA Online’s Cayo Perico update. Now he has a station.
“I’ve been playing GTA since way before my music ever made it into the game, so this one is personal,” Burna Boy told Hypebeast in an exclusive interview. “GTA has always understood that the music is part of the world, not just something playing in the background,” he added.
RaiNao, the Puerto Rican artist who plays La Gata to Bad Bunny’s El Martillo, sounded just as invested. “Cocoteo gets our vibe, our slang, our taste, our pride, our experiences, our traditions, and all our crazy antics,” she said in a statement to Pitchfork. Del Rey told Rolling Stone the series was already part of family life: “One of the coolest things about this is the fact that the first time some of our family got to LA they actually knew the roads because of playing the game.”
