August is quieter for blockbusters, since Nolan and Spider-Man already own the summer, but it is stacked for anyone who likes their screens with a soundtrack. A K-pop group takes over cinemas, a drummer tells his survival story, the Jonas Brothers return to summer camp, and Ted Lasso comes back for a fourth season.
We picked eight releases from the guides at Boston.com, Epicstream and Tom’s Guide, in release order. Dates are U.S.
Ted Lasso Season 4 (Apple TV, Aug. 5): the women’s team
Jason Sudeikis’s affable coach returns, per Boston.com, now in charge of the women’s team at the fictional AFC Richmond. It is one of two big streaming comebacks of the month.

One Night Only (cinemas, Aug. 7): the one night a year
Will Gluck’s rom-com follows Allie and Owen (Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner), two love-starved strangers who collide in a slightly fictionalized New York “on the one night of the year when single people are allowed to have sex,” per Epicstream. The cast also includes Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, King Princess, Ziwe, Molly Ringwald and LeVar Burton.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma (cinemas, Aug. 7): Jane Schoenbrun’s slasher about slashers
A young director tries to revive an iconic horror franchise and tracks down the original film’s reclusive star, and their meeting becomes a bloody, surreal spiral. The cast includes Gillian Anderson, Hannah Einbinder, Eva Victor and Arthur Conti, and the film premiered at Cannes in May, Epicstream notes.

KATSEYE: WILD HEARTS (cinemas, Aug. 12): the group’s first cinema event
KATSEYE’s documentary, a limited theatrical run from Nadia Hallgren, covers the pressure cooker of Dream Academy through their breakout, and lands two days before their third EP, WILD. We have the trailer and the full rundown.

Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear (Hulu and Disney+, Aug. 13): survival, on the drums
The 90-minute documentary from Justin Krook and Michael Dwyer, which debuted at Tribeca, follows the Blink-182 drummer through the 2008 plane crash and his recovery, with Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, Questlove and the late Taylor Hawkins. Read the trailer story.

Camp Rock 3 (Disney+, Aug. 14): the Jonas Brothers go back
When Connect 3 loses its opening act for a major reunion tour, the band returns to Camp Rock to find the next big thing. The Jonas Brothers reprise their roles, Maria Canals-Barrera is back as Connie, and Demi Lovato is an executive producer, though Epicstream says it isn’t clear whether she appears on screen.

The End of Oak Street (cinemas, Aug. 14): a neighborhood goes missing
A mysterious cosmic event rips Oak Street out of suburbia and drops its residents somewhere unknown. Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery star, David Robert Mitchell writes and directs, and J.J. Abrams produces.

Lanterns (HBO Max, Aug. 16): a grounded Green Lantern
DC’s new series stars Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, and TVLine says it follows HBO’s Watchmen by making its central characters flawed and relatable and rooting the story in modern-day middle America.
