Sunday’s estimate had Spider-Man at $355 million, a few million short of the record. Then Monday’s actuals came in. Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened to $360 million domestically, Variety reports, edging Avengers: Endgame’s $357 million to become the biggest opening weekend in box office history, not adjusted for inflation.
Worldwide, the film launched to $932 million, second only to Endgame’s $1.2 billion. It set records for Thursday previews ($72 million) and for opening day ($169.8 million), per Variety, and it is Sony’s best launch ever. Brand New Day and Endgame are the only films that have crossed $300 million in a single weekend, and the next two openings on the list, No Way Home ($260 million) and Infinity War ($257 million), are around $100 million behind.

The Hollywood Reporter notes how far the film outran expectations: Sony’s projection before the weekend was $195 million domestic and $465 million global, and the film carries a $225 million production budget. Audiences gave it an A from CinemaScore and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics are slightly lower at 90%. The crowd skewed young and male: 36% were between 18 and 24, and 61% were men.
Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman kept it modest:
Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it.

Destin Daniel Cretton, who made Shang-Chi, directed this fourth Tom Holland outing, which picks up after No Way Home left the world forgetting Peter Parker existed. Peter is still fighting crime while missing MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon), and while a mysterious entity threatens New York. Watch the trailer below.
The record arrives in a summer that already had a Nolan hit. Two weeks earlier, The Odyssey opened to $124.5 million with the IMAX screens to itself. Now THR reports that Imax has changed course and will split screens between Brand New Day and The Odyssey. We later checked in on the epic’s big-screen staying power, when it took its IMAX screens back in October.
What comes next: Variety expects the film to pass $2 billion globally, a milestone only seven movies have reached, and Marvel Studios now heads into Avengers: Doomsday in December with fresh momentum, THR says.
