Linkin Park never set out to make a documentary. Joe Hahn’s cameras were supposed to capture one show in São Paulo, and then, as he puts it, it “slowly became something much bigger.” On Tuesday (Aug. 4), the band announced Unshatter, the film that came out of it, for theaters worldwide from Sept. 30, Billboard reports. Tickets go on sale Aug. 13.

The film, whose logline is “The Hardest Part of Ending is Starting Again,” covers the stretch from the 2022 recording sessions behind From Zero to the São Paulo concert, according to Rolling Stone. It mixes vault footage, performance clips and new interviews with the band and fans, and follows the arrival of vocalist Emily Armstrong and drummer Colin Brittain after the band’s seven-year hiatus following the death of Chester Bennington in 2017.

The trailer opens on the stakes. “So much of our lives had gone into Linkin Park, and it all just came to a crashing halt,” Mike Shinoda says in one clip, before the musicians admit they worried the band was finished. Then Armstrong arrives, and the footage turns to triumphant concert scenes. Watch it below.

Hahn, who has played synthesizer and turntables in the band since 1996 and directed its videos for “Numb,” “Somewhere I Belong” and “Bleed It Out,” says he wanted the film to feel as uncertain as it did at the time:

I didn’t want to make a film that looked back on everything with perfect clarity. I wanted people to experience that uncertainty the same way we did in real time.

The music arrives first. Unshatter Film Soundtrack (Live in São Paulo) is due Sept. 25, five days before the film, and Consequence says it runs 20 songs from the show. Billboard adds that it includes songs left out of the documentary, and a live “Somewhere I Belong” is already out.

The release extends the story the band has been telling in public since 2024. “The Emptiness Machine,” the first song with Armstrong and Brittain, came out that year, followed by “Heavy Is the Crown” and the album From Zero; the latest single, “Unshatter,” appeared last year on the album’s deluxe edition, Rolling Stone notes.

It also joins a crowded run of music documentaries on screens this fall, including the Oasis reunion film, KATSEYE’s WILD HEARTS and Travis Barker’s Louder Than Fear. Unshatter begins a limited theatrical run Sept. 30, with additional screenings in select cities worldwide after that.
