Bruno Mars has finished his record, and it’s called The Romantic. On Wednesday (Jan. 7), he revealed the title, the cover art and a Feb. 27 release date for his fourth solo album, his first since 2016’s 24K Magic, per Rolling Stone. New music would follow two days later, on Friday (Jan. 9).

The news landed two days after he posted on X on Jan. 5: “My album is done.” Billboard called it his first confirmation of a new solo project since 24K Magic. His Jan. 7 follow-up gave the date and promised new music that Friday.

A tracklist posted by Pitchfork begins with “Risk It All” and runs through “Cha Cha Cha,” “I Just Might,” “God Was Showing Off,” “Why You Wanna Fight?,” “On My Soul,” “Something Serious,” “Nothing Left” and “Dance With Me.” “I Just Might” would turn out to be the lead single, Pitchfork later reported, and the video for “Risk It All” followed on release day.

Mars hasn’t been missing. As Pitchfork put it, his music is so ubiquitous that it’s easy to forget he hasn’t released a solo album in a decade. In 2024, his duet with Lady Gaga, “Die With a Smile,” topped charts in more than 30 countries, and his collaboration with ROSÉ, “APT.,” went No. 1 in more than 50. In 2021, he teamed with Anderson .Paak as Silk Sonic.

That duo’s “Leave the Door Open” won both Record and Song of the Year at the 2022 Grammys, and Mars said then that they had decided not to submit the album itself: “We’d be crazy to ask for anything more.” Weeks ahead of the next ceremony, “APT.” had three nominations, including Record and Song of the Year, Rolling Stone noted.

He did go to the show: Mars performed at the Grammys on Feb. 1, the night Bad Bunny won Album of the Year, per Pitchfork. By October, he was in the middle of a playful online triangle with Drake and Karol G.
