The friendliest rivalry in pop has a new chapter. On the Popcast podcast, released Wednesday (Oct. 8), Karol G said she coached Drake through his Spanish on their duet “Ahí,” 10 days after Bruno Mars announced on Instagram that he was going to win her back.
I love him singing in Spanish, and he does it so good that when I presented the song to him, he was like, ‘Should I do like a verse in English or something?’ And I was like, ‘You should do it in Spanish. You sound so good in Spanish.’

She said she coached him as he recorded his verse line by line, down to his pronunciation of words like “rico.” “It was so much fun; he’s amazing,” she added, per Billboard. The Drake talk starts around the 51-minute mark of the episode.

Both men are on her August album, No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto. Mars sings with her on the English-language “Still,” and Drake sings in Spanish on “Ahí,” which topped Hot Latin Songs and reached No. 44 on the Hot 100. Since then the three have turned the overlap into a running joke. Rolling Stone wondered whether it’s all a marketing tactic for the songs, and concluded they’re clearly having fun with it.
How it started
In August, Mars joined Karol G at SoFi Stadium to debut “Still” live and film its video there, Complex reports. When she announced the video, he commented on her post, per Rolling Stone: “That don’t look like acting to me Carolina.”
Then Drake made his move. At her Houston stadium show on Sept. 27, he came out for the live debut of “Ahí,” then stayed for “Janice STFU” and “One Dance,” during which Karol G danced with him, Billboard reports. The clip went viral, and the next day Mars posted a photo of himself staring out of a plane window:

Mars didn’t wait long. On Oct. 1 he released the video for “Dance With Me,” from The Romantic, with Karol G as his co-star. He serenades her by phone from a booth while an orchestra plays outside her window, and they end up embracing on a balcony under fireworks.

Mars doubled down the next day with a long thank-you to his co-star, noting that she shot his video right after three sold-out stadium shows. He signed it “Sincerely, The Romantic.”
