Venice is getting a rock band. The festival’s 2026 lineup, unveiled Thursday (July 23), includes the world premiere of Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger, and Variety reports that both Liam and Noel Gallagher are expected on the Lido. It is “a dose of rock ’n’ roll,” in Variety’s words, in a lineup it calls a bit more subdued than recent years, with less Hollywood glitz.

The 83rd edition runs Sept. 2–12. It opens with Danny Boyle’s Ink, with Guy Pearce as Rupert Murdoch and Jack O’Connell as Larry Lamb, the editor who helped him turn The Sun into Britain’s best-selling tabloid in 1969. Competition includes Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine, a CIA comedy with John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell and Tom Waits; Florian Zeller’s Bunker with Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz; Werner Herzog’s Bucking Fastard, with sisters Rooney and Kate Mara; and Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Love, his first feature since Burning.

The buzziest American title is Primetime. Lance Oppenheim, the documentarian behind Some Kind of Heaven, makes his feature debut with an A24 drama in which Robert Pattinson plays NBC newsman Chris Hansen as his To Catch a Predator format becomes a media sensation, The Hollywood Reporter says. Pattinson, who also produces, will walk the carpet. We’ve since reported on Phoebe Bridgers’s role in the film and the end theme she wrote.

The music crossover goes beyond Oasis. Variety notes that Russell Crowe is expected for What Love Builds, a feature-length documentary on his band Indoor Garden Party, and The Brutalist composer Daniel Blumberg sits on the jury, which Maggie Gyllenhaal presides over.

The Oasis film is a Disney release, created by Steven Knight of Peaky Blinders and directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace. It features the first joint interviews with Noel and Liam in more than 25 years, per Variety. After Venice it opens in IMAX and cinemas worldwide for a limited run from Sept. 11, then streams on Disney+ and Hulu. Our streaming report has the dates.

Artistic director Alberto Barbera used the announcement to make the case for the theatrical experience:

To those who are skeptical about the state of cinema, all they have to do is set foot in a movie theatre where they are screening Christopher Nolan’s “Odyssey” to realise not just that cinema is not on its deathbed, but that it can continuously regenerate itself, continuing to generate epiphanies and miracles of vision.

The selection has a gender problem. THR counts May el-Toukhy, with Woman Unknown, as the sole female director among the 20 competition titles, nearly a decade after Barbera signed the 50/50 by 2020 pledge. Watch the festival’s presentation of the lineup below.

The jury will pick a Golden Lion winner on Sept. 12, and El-Toukhy’s film is the one we’d circled: it went on to win.
