Phoebe Bridgers spent the fall on both sides of the camera, and this week the two halves met. A24 has released her installment of Sound Check at Cherry Lane Theatre, a three-song session filmed by Lance Oppenheim, the director of Primetime. She opens alone with “On Video,” the closing theme she wrote for his film, then brings out Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus.
Primetime, in theaters since Sept. 25, is Oppenheim’s first dramatic feature: an A24 retelling of Chris Hansen’s To Catch a Predator, with Robert Pattinson as Hansen and Merritt Wever and Skyler Gisondo co-starring. Bridgers plays a decoy who draws in potential predators, Variety notes. It’s her first time acting in a film; her only previous big-screen appearance was a 2024 cameo as herself in Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow, per Pitchfork.

The song isn’t a tacked-on single. She composed “On Video” for the film, working from Ari Balouzian’s score, and it plays over the end credits, Pitchfork reports. It’s already in the awards conversation: Gold Derby lists it among the likely Best Original Song contenders and says the film’s best actor and best picture buzz could lift it further. (Here’s the rest of that race.)

The film itself is getting attention for Pattinson. Rolling Stone’s David Fear called his Hansen “a twitchy, touchy embodiment of true-crime ambition” and wrote that the movie “recounts how this show didn’t create a sense of collective bloodlust, it just rode a wave that was already there.”
The Boygenius reunion
In the Sound Check video, Bridgers sings “On Video” in dim light in front of a bank of televisions. Baker and Dacus join her for two songs from Lost Weekend, her first solo album in six years: the country-tinged “Haunted” and a pared-back “Lost Boys,” sung as a trio. It’s the first time the three have appeared together on camera since Boygenius played Saturday Night Live in November 2023, Variety notes.
They shot it at Cherry Lane Theatre, the West Village off-Broadway house that A24 now owns and operates, after Bridgers’ three sold-out nights at Barclays Center, where Baker and Dacus had already joined her for “Not Strong Enough” and “Cool About It.” Tame Impala and Blood Orange have done the series before her. Watch it below.

What’s next: Bridgers finishes the U.S. leg of her phones-free Lost Tour this month with Alex G opening, then heads to the U.K. and Europe with Isaac Wood in support. Oppenheim’s next premiere is close behind. You Can See Everything, his Elizabeth Holmes documentary with Nathan Fielder, opens in theaters on Oct. 16.
