Michael Jackson was launched onto the Rose Bowl stage at Super Bowl XXVII, then stood silent for nearly two minutes while the crowd roared. Now Hulu and ESPN are making a documentary about how that halftime show came together.

Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl arrives in February 2027 on Hulu and ESPN, and on Disney+ in Australia, Variety reports. Bao Nguyen, who directed 2024’s The Greatest Night in Pop, the film about the making of “We Are the World,” directs and produces it. It promises never-before-seen footage of Jackson and his team preparing for the Jan. 31, 1993, performance, and Skydance Sports, Optimum Productions and Into the Deep End Films produce, with NFL Films among the executive producers.

The 1993 set, as Rolling Stone recounts it, opened with a voice-over by James Earl Jones and ran through “Billie Jean,” “Black or White” and “We Are the World,” with a choir of 3,000 Los Angeles-area children joining him for “We Are the World” and the closer, “Heal the World.” Variety adds “Jam” to the list. Rolling Stone ranks the show No. 16 among all Super Bowl halftimes.

The documentary’s pitch, per its description, is how Jackson “catapulted the Super Bowl halftime show into the single biggest spectacle in pop culture.” Before him, Variety notes, the slot usually went to marching bands and past-their-prime artists. After him came U2, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé and Bad Bunny, whose Super Bowl LX show won a record seven Emmys in September.

No exact date has been set. February is also the month of Super Bowl LXI, on Feb. 14, 2027, which Disney+ will stream alongside ABC and ESPN, Laughing Place notes. The film lands after Michael, the Jackson biopic that opened to a record $97 million in April, and Variety says a sequel to that film is in the works.
