Netflix has a new most-watched title of the week, and it is a video game preview. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a 27-minute run of in-game footage, drew 31.1 million views between its Thursday, Aug. 27 debut and Sunday, Aug. 30, according to Variety. That put it at No. 1 on the streamer’s English-language film list in 87 of the 93 countries it tracks.

The footage is the longest look at the game Rockstar has given anyone, after two trailers over three years. It was captured entirely on PlayStation 5 and follows the leads, Jason and Lucia, through cutscenes and gameplay in Vice City and the surrounding state of Leonida. Netflix’s own synopsis frames the pair as stuck on “the darkest side of the sunniest place in America” after a job goes sideways.

The numbers are bigger than they look because Netflix barely had it to itself. The special had a six-hour exclusive window starting at 3 p.m. ET on Aug. 27, and Rockstar put the same video on its YouTube channel at 9 p.m. that night. By Variety’s count it still beat the week’s runner-up film, The Whisper Man, which finished with 23.2 million views, and every other film and TV title on the platform.

Don’t read the Netflix and YouTube totals side by side. Netflix defines a view as hours watched divided by runtime, so a household that plays it twice counts once. YouTube counts a view the moment a video starts, repeats and partial plays included. Rockstar’s own upload had passed 17 million by Tuesday (Sept. 1), per Variety, and What’s on Netflix noted that the YouTube total sits at roughly half of the Netflix figure, though it flagged that the two aren’t a clean comparison.

Premiere day was messier than the chart suggests. Complex reported that demand briefly crashed Netflix and sent concurrent users up 35%, with app downloads up 24%. Netflix VP of Nonfiction Series Brandon Riegg credited the series’ pull in a statement. “Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right,” Riegg said.

It is a strange new lane for a studio that has made its reveals a spectacle for years: a game announcement debuting inside a streaming service’s film rankings, scored against The Whisper Man instead of other games. The detail Netflix will care about is the one in the chart footnote. The special was the first of its kind on the platform, and 31.1 million people showed up for it.

Grand Theft Auto VI arrives Nov. 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, 13 years after Grand Theft Auto V. Rockstar has since named the six artist-hosted radio stations that will score the drive, and put out Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album.
