Earlier on Friday, Tinashe was dancing backstage with Charli xcx to a song they were both on 11 years ago. By the end of the night she was onstage at Austin City Limits, giving “Nobody Wanna Dance Anymore” its live debut during Charli’s headlining set on Oct. 9.
The backstage clip, which Tinashe posted to her Instagram Stories, was set to Ty Dolla $ign’s 2015 single “Drop That Kitty,” which featured them both. In Zilker Park she did two songs from her new album, Popstar: the debut of “Nobody Wanna Dance Anymore” and the single “Melatonin,” Billboard reports. Stereogum called the first a fan favorite.
A victory lap for Popstar
The timing made it a celebration. Popstar debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 dated Oct. 10 with 35,500 equivalent album units, the biggest week of her career and her first top 10 album. Album sales made up 22,000 of those units, helped by eight vinyl and CD variants, and streams added 13.73 million plays. Her previous best was Aquarius, which peaked at No. 17 in 2014. Her 2024 album Quantum Baby debuted at No. 199.

She took the news the way you’d hope. Posting on X on Oct. 5, she thanked fans and signed off with “I’m cryinggggg,” per Billboard.
I’m so unbelievably grateful, this is CRAZY! #6 BILLBOARD DEBUT
Tinashe, on X, Billboard
The breakout has been a long time coming. “No Broke Boys,” her dance rework with Disco Lines, spent 24 weeks at No. 1 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs and reached No. 36 on the Hot 100, her first top 40 hit since “2 On” in 2014. Tinashe told Rolling Stone in September that she has felt underrated: “There’s a lot of us girls who have been working and grinding for 10-plus years in the game.”

Charli’s ACL guest list

Charli is two for two. During ACL’s first weekend, on Oct. 2, she brought out her Sweat Tour mate Troye Sivan for “Le Boy” and “Party.” That weekend opened the festival’s 25th edition in a rain-soaked Zilker Park, and Saturday’s gates were pushed back to 2 p.m. for mud cleanup, The Austin Chronicle reported. She and Tinashe have history beyond “Drop That Kitty,” too: Tinashe joined a 2024 remix of Charli’s “B2B,” which appeared on Brat and It’s Completely Different but Also Still Brat.
ACL’s 25th anniversary wraps up Sunday (Oct. 11) with Twenty One Pilots, The xx, Geese and Sofi Tukker. Tinashe, meanwhile, was announced on Oct. 9 for Chappell Roan’s Super Graphic Spectacular, a two-day charity fundraiser in Los Angeles, Stereogum reports.
