The Met Gala’s big musical moment was also its quietest. On Monday night (May 4), Sabrina Carpenter and Stevie Nicks stood hand in hand under the lights of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Egyptian wing and sang Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” a song from 1975, to a room full of the fashion world’s most dressed-up guests.

The night ran like a mini festival bill. Carpenter opened with her own songs, “House Tour,” “Espresso” and “Please, Please, Please.” Nicks was the headliner, with “Gypsy” and “Edge of Seventeen” on her list, and she brought Carpenter back out for “Landslide” and again for “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow,” which Rolling Stone Australia reports had an assist from Carpenter. mxdwn, citing Consequence, says a 12-person choir joined as well. The pairing makes sense for Carpenter, who is on a run of generational handoffs. She came to the Gala fresh off two weekends headlining Coachella, where she brought out Madonna for a surprise set and debuted their new single, “Bring Your Love,” which is out now. She also served on the Gala’s host committee, and her red-carpet Dior dress by Jonathan Anderson nodded to Sabrina, the 1954 Audrey Hepburn film, using actual strips of film from the movie.

That dress code, built around the Costume Institute’s new exhibition “Costume Art,” brought out a deep bench of musicians. Beyoncé, one of the night’s co-chairs, returned to the Gala after a 10-year absence, according to Rolling Stone. Charli xcx, Doja Cat, Lisa, Teyana Taylor, Sam Smith and Madonna all walked the carpet. Bad Bunny arrived as a senior citizen in white hair and wrinkle makeup. Asked by a Vogue host how long the look took, he joked, “53 years exactly. It took a little bit but it’s worth it.”

The Gala was not without friction: Pitchfork notes that naming Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos as honorary chairs drew vocal opposition and calls for a boycott. The party is also the opening act for “Costume Art,” the exhibition that will inaugurate the Met’s new 12,000-square-foot Condé M. Nast Galleries.
