Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter have turned the surprise of Coachella into a record. “Bring Your Love,” the pair’s dance-floor team-up, came out Friday (May 1), a few weeks after they debuted it on stage in the California desert.
It is the second single from Confessions II, due July 3 on Warner Records, following “I Feel So Free.” The album continues 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor, and Madonna produced the song with Stuart Price. Price builds the track from a fragment of Inner City’s “Good Life” into what Pitchfork calls “a constantly peaking staircase of a beat.”
Watch the official visualizer above. The song’s argument is that the dance floor is a contested space where Madonna isn’t entirely welcome, an idea Pitchfork finds “extremely vague and nonsensical—but damn if it isn’t fun.” The lines that stick are the shade: Madonna’s purr of “I know where the bodies are buried” and Carpenter’s answer, “Don’t try to distract me with numbers.”

The track comes with a manifesto. In a statement about Confessions II, Madonna wrote that dance music is more than escape.
People think that dance music is superficial, but they’ve got it all wrong. The dance floor is not just a place, it’s a threshold: a ritualistic space where movement replaces language.

The moment it comes from matters too. Carpenter brought Madonna out as a surprise guest during her weekend-two Coachella headlining set, a bonus 10-minute appearance that also included “Vogue” and “Like a Prayer,” per Billboard. Madonna told the crowd it had been 20 years to the day since she played the festival’s dance tent. “That was such a thrill for me,” she said, “so you can imagine what a thrill it is for me to be back 20 years later.”
Friday was crowded. The same day brought Kacey Musgraves’ Middle of Nowhere, Zara Larsson’s collaborations album Girls Trip and a new Sienna Spiro song on the Devil Wears Prada 2 soundtrack, all of which we round up in May’s best new music. Confessions II follows on July 3.
