Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan Take Over David Byrne’s Game Show for the “Expectations” Remix

Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan finally have a song together, and a studio audience, a Family Feud spoof and David Byrne came with it. The “Expectations” remix and its video arrived Friday (Oct. 16), Billboard reports.

It isn’t a reinvention. As Stereogum put it, the second verse of the You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love track is swapped for a new one from Roan, who also joins Rodrigo on the hook and the ad-libs. It’s Roan’s first time as a featured guest on anyone’s song.

The video, directed by Bardia Zeinali, is where the real fun is. It plays sets modeled on Family Feud and Hollywood Squares, with Byrne as Johnny Johnson, host of a show called “Big Expectations,” and Roan squaring off against Rodrigo on “Sister Squabble,” Variety reports. Their shared producer, Dan Nigro, turns up at the end holding a brick-sized 1990s phone. Watch it below.

Speaking to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe hours before release, Roan explained what she brought to the verse, per Billboard:

I love making things a little gay … It was fun to just be like, they’re all wives.

Rodrigo said she was “a bit sheepish” about asking Byrne to appear, but that he committed to the role, per Variety:

I always feel shy asking people for favors, but he was so down … He showed up the entire day.

The two go back years. Roan opened the first leg of Rodrigo’s Guts tour and played Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival in late August. Byrne has also been a Rodrigo fan for a while: she brought him out at Governors Ball last year to sing “Burning Down the House,” Stereogum notes. “Expectations” peaked at No. 20 on the Hot 100 after the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Roan’s next appearance is closer to home. She hosts the charity show The Super Graphic Spectacular next week, with Tinashe, Caroline Polachek and MUNA on the bill, per Pitchfork.
