A pink wall on Melrose Avenue gave away the longest title of her career, a swing-set cover and a reunion with producer Dan Nigro.

The title started as graffiti. A wall on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles that had read “OR” in purple, then “love” in baby pink, was painted Thursday (April 2) with the full thing: you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. Olivia Rodrigo confirmed it as the name of her third album, due June 12 on Geffen.

It is a long way from the four-letter titles of Sour and Guts, which is what fans had expected, as Rolling Stone noted. The cover, per Billboard, shows Rodrigo leaning backward on a swing against a pale blue sky. Producer Dan Nigro, who made her first two albums with her, is back for this one, according to Pitchfork.

The title says plenty about the songs. In her fan newsletter, Rodrigo wrote, “No matter how hard I try to write love songs they always come out laced with a little melancholy. I am so proud of this record and I can’t wait for you to hear it.” That fits what she told British Vogue in March. She had realized that her “favorite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a tinge of fear or yearning in them,” and the record is full of what she called “sad love songs.”

Rodrigo has spent months dropping clues. A hotline message promised “true clarity and renewal just after the pink moon,” which rose April 2, Rolling Stone reported, and the Melrose wall changed color and words in stages. She also told Vogue she “spent so much time” in London while making the album, which has “a lot of songs that are London vibes,” The FADER reported.

Why it matters

It will be her first album since Guts (2023), which topped the Billboard 200 and produced the Hot 100 No. 1 “Vampire.” Sour was a Billboard 200 No. 1 too, with “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U” both reaching the top of the Hot 100, so a third album has little left to prove except range. The gap has been filled with looking back: a double-LP Live at Glastonbury in December, and a January cover of “Drivers License” with David Byrne for the song’s fifth anniversary.

No features had been announced as of Thursday, The FADER noted, so the title, the cover and a pink wall are all anyone has to go on until June 12.

Months later, “Serena Joy” sold out 500 CDs at one record shop before reaching streaming, and the album landed on our list of the best albums of 2026 so far.
