The night belonged to a cursed New England island. Widow’s Bay, Apple TV’s horror comedy, won six Emmys on Monday (Sept. 14) and finished with 14, the most for a comedy series in a single year, TheWrap reported. It broke the record of 13 set last year by The Studio, and it had already collected eight at the earlier ceremonies.
The wins went across the board: best comedy series, directing for Hiro Murai, writing for creator Katie Dippold, supporting actor Stephen Root and supporting actress Kate O’Flynn. Matthew Rhys won lead actor in a comedy for playing the town’s mayor, and, as NPR put it, became the first person to win in two lead acting categories in one night after also taking lead actor in a limited series for The Beast in Me. Backstage, holding two trophies, he promised that “[t]he celebrations will be long, varied, and I hope at times wild,” according to the Associated Press via Scripps News.

Dippold, accepting best comedy, thanked the studio for the freedom to be strange.
Thank you, Apple, for letting us take this crazy, creative swing. They truly just let us do this weird show.

In drama, The Pitt won best drama series for a second straight year and Noah Wyle repeated as lead actor, but the HBO Max series, the top drama nominee with 25, won no other award on the night. “This is all I’ve ever wanted to do, and this is the only club I’ve ever wanted to join,” Wyle said. Rhea Seehorn won her first Emmy as lead actress for Pluribus, Allison Janney and Tom Pelphrey took the supporting prizes, and DTF St. Louis won best limited series.

Jean Smart’s fifth lead comedy actress win for Hacks was that show’s only trophy of the night, and it made her the first actor to win every year for a series that ran more than three seasons, AP noted. “What a ride this has been,” she said after a standing ovation.
Host Mariska Hargitay, who was “impressively game,” did what she could to keep the energy up through what NPR called a strangely paced evening. It came a little more than a week after Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show won a record seven Creative Arts Emmys, as we reported in our look at that sweep, and Zendaya, nominated for Euphoria, debuted a new pixie cut at the ceremony.
What comes next is a defense of the crown: Widow’s Bay has been renewed for a second season, TheWrap said, while The Studio will be eligible again next year.
