Doja Cat was in full stage costume and ready to walk on when Primavera Sound called it. On Thursday night (June 4), storms with gusts of up to 80 km/h and heavy rain forced Barcelona’s festival to cancel the opening day’s two headline sets, Doja’s and Massive Attack’s, along with Alex G, Mac DeMarco and Bad Gyal.

Organizers said the Revolut and Estrella Damm stages, where Doja and Massive Attack were due, were the most exposed to the weather. The festival tried to push both sets back until the storm passed, but the rain didn’t let up. “It was not possible to guarantee safety for the continuation of performances on either stage, despite all the efforts made,” organizers said in a statement carried by Rolling Stone. Some smaller stages resumed after the initial downpour, and there were no serious incidents.

Doja addressed fans directly. She posted on X, then went live on Instagram with her makeup running.

Barcelona i am fully dressed and ready to go to stage but it’s just not safe enough to continue the show tonight. I’m so sorry that this is how this shit has to be right now. I will think of everything I can under the sun to make it up to you. Please stay safe and warm I will see…

I’m absolutely crushed, and torn to pieces about the whole thing.

She also promised a return. “I will be back, and I’m gonna come back with a fire that you’ve never seen,” she said, per Complex. Massive Attack’s 3D and Daddy G were just as blunt in an Instagram statement. “No one can control severe weather, we understand that,” they wrote, but the safety of the audience and crews “must be paramount.”

Why it matters

Primavera is a three-day festival that expects about 70,000 people a day at Parc del Fòrum, according to PinkNews, and its first day ended with no headliner on stage. Many fans left the site as the weather worsened. The festival says it will begin refunds on June 8 for ticket holders affected on Thursday.

The rest of the lineup stayed intact. Friday’s gates opened at 3:45 p.m. as normal for a slate that included The Cure, Addison Rae, PinkPantheress, Ethel Cain and Skrillex, with the festival running through Saturday (June 6). One of the weekend’s big moments came when Olivia Rodrigo brought out Robert Smith of The Cure, and weather would strike another major festival bill that summer: Lil Uzi Vert lost his Lollapalooza set to storms.
