Kai Cenat took his bow at the end of his own runway on Saturday night with an arm in the air, and far more people were watching on their phones than the room could ever hold. Dazed counted over 180,000 people livestreaming Vivet’s first show at New York Fashion Week, a number most emerging labels never see.

The 24-year-old streamer, the most-streamed Twitch user in the world, showed 41 looks on Sept. 12 at Cipriani, the gilded Lower Manhattan venue that hosted Alexander Wang’s fall 2013 show, Complex reports. Ms. Lauryn Hill sat in the audience alongside Karrahbooo, PlaqueBoyMax and members of Cenat’s AMP crew. Rolling Stone also spotted Jaden Smith and Luka Sabbat, plus fellow streamers Jasontheween, Rakai and Duke Dennis.

It was a fashion show built like a diary. Guests received personalized invites and a Vivet journal documenting Cenat’s start as a designer, with Polaroids taped into its pages. “The way I was writing in my journal is exactly what I wanted to put on the runway,” Cenat told Rolling Stone. The collection was presented in three acts, opening with the Beginner Hoodie, the first piece he sewed by hand, after months studying construction and manufacturing in Italy. Alton Mason closed the show in a floor-sweeping fur coat, per Dazed.

The name is Latin. Vivet translates to “he, she, or it will live forever,” a nod to Cenat’s ambition to make clothes that outlast trends. He originally wanted to call the label Eterna, but the name was already taken, he wrote in the journal. “It was hard for me to move away from this name,” he noted.

When I first saw this space, I was at awe.

The argument around it

Most of the reaction wasn’t about the clothes. Dazed pointed to Instagram comments that read like a verdict. “Feels like he watched a couple of Rick shows and called it a day,” said one. “Money will never buy a unique vision,” said another. Its own review was blunt: boxy hoodies, leather biker trousers, fur gilets and drawstring joggers, and “the clothes at VIVET weren’t life-changing.” It also noted the collection pulled from both the Demna and Yeezy playbooks, which is a common thing for a first collection to do.

Cenat has been here before. In March he revealed a physical “hate wall” in Italy covered in printed screenshots of people mocking his move into fashion, according to HotNewHipHop, and said he used it as motivation. Rolling Stone compared the pile-on with the reception for Kanye West’s 2011 womenswear debut. Fashion Roadman, the critic Ayọ̀ Òjó, wrote that Cenat “created his own platform, lane and audience separate to the industry and is utilising it.”

Cenat’s own answer is the journal he put on the runway. “I just was honest with myself,” he told Rolling Stone.

The bigger question is what Vivet does once the noise settles. He is the same streamer who reacted to the GTA VI Extended Look and told Rockstar to take his money, per Complex, and he has already moved on to the next project: an IRL livestream series to explore the “unexplored,” with Iceland as the first stop, win.gg reports. The fashion calendar moves on to London and Milan, but this show will be argued about for a while.
