Troye Sivan Swaps the Club for Longing on 'She's the Best,' Then Drops His 'Gayest' Video Yet

His fourth album trades dance-floor highs for wishful love songs, with help from Jack Antonoff, Nicole Kidman and a Madonna sample.

Troye Sivan's last album was the night out. She's the Best, out Friday (Oct. 9) on Interscope, is the ride back to the hotel. His fourth album trades the club-ready electro-pop of 2023's Something to Give Each Other for softer, lonelier songs, many of them written to a partner he hasn't met yet.

It came with a video for “FF,” and Sivan had set expectations on X two days earlier:

Somehow have made the gayest music video of my career

In a reply, he clarified that it was “GAY gay.” The clip, directed by Gordon von Steiner, who also made the title track's video, keeps Sivan wrapped around a male love interest in and around a stylish beach house. Watch it below.

Under the heat, it's a sad song. “‘FF’ is an undying love song to a man I don't know yet,” Sivan said in press materials quoted by Pitchfork. “It's me at my most longing, and about how lonely it is to love someone who isn't here yet. It might sound like a vow, but it's really a wish.”

That's the whole album in miniature. Something to Give Each Other brought Sivan his first three Grammy nominations and the arena-filling Sweat Tour with Charli xcx, and the pace took a toll. “At some point along the way, a disconnect started to form where I was going home to the hotel by myself, and I actually was feeling deeply lonely a lot of the time,” he told Rolling Stone.

So the sound got quieter. The FADER hears soft rock and orchestral pop. NME, which gave it four stars out of five, hears grungy '90s dance with a trip-hop lean, and finds it looser and less immediate than its predecessor but consistently appealing. Sivan recorded much of it at home in Los Angeles with his brother Tyde Levi, and in New York with Jack Antonoff, his first sessions with Antonoff since his 2015 debut, Blue Neighbourhood. He also produced a couple of songs himself, a first for him.

The famous friends are still around. Nicole Kidman, his Boy Erased co-star, stars in the title track's video, though Sivan assumed until the end that something would come up. “I was like, ‘I'm going to believe it when we wrap the video,’” he told Billboard. Ian McKellen narrates the video for “Party,” which samples Madonna's “Music.” She “said yes pretty much right away,” he added. Lily-Rose Depp speaks on “Lost Time,” near the end of the record.

None of it was built to chase the charts. “I've never really strived for a ‘hit’ in my career,” he said in the same interview. As for whether being a man in pop holds him back, he told The FADER it doesn't: “I literally do whatever I want and however people respond is how they respond.”
