The time has come to crank it once more. Slayyyter released “Crank 2” on Thursday (Sept. 10), a sequel to “Crank,” the spring single that helped make Wor$t Girl in America her breakthrough, with a self-directed video full of her classic imagery, per Pitchfork.
The original warned listeners not to get her angry. The follow-up is the consequence. Rolling Stone calls it “a little more sinister and infinitely more pissed off,” over clattering production and a militant, monochromatic video.
The inverse album
“Crank 2” is the second release from what Rolling Stone describes as the inverted, extended universe of Wor$t Girl in America, tentatively titled Wor$t Man in America. It follows August’s “Brand New Chanel$,” a flip of “Beat Up Chanel$” that Pitchfork says reimagines the original’s electroclash as big-room EDM recession pop. The video, per Pitchfork, drops hints about the rumored album. Fellow pop outsider Shygirl announced her own album the same day.

Slayyyter told Rolling Stone earlier this year that the companion project was about staying in the moment:
I want to live here for a little longer, so I’m kind of making an inverse album, if you will.

Why it matters
Slayyyter has said she first expected Wor$t Girl in America to be a final sendoff after years of trying to break through. “I was so depressed while making a lot of it, and I felt so hopeless,” she told Rolling Stone, imagining it “probably won’t go anywhere.” Instead it has become a run: new songs every few weeks and a tour that keeps going.
What’s next
She is in the middle of the Wor$t Girl in America tour, which continues through the fall and includes a show later this month at the All Things Go Festival, per Pitchfork. No release date has been announced for Wor$t Man in America.
