Gucci Mane has responded to the case the way he knows best: with a song. “Crash Dummy,” released Friday (April 10) and produced by Zaytoven, arrives a week after federal prosecutors accused his 1017 Records artist Pooh Shiesty of kidnapping and robbing him at gunpoint in Dallas. Pitchfork notes that Gucci never calls Pooh out by name, but there is little doubt who the song is about.
The song gives an abridged version of the alleged stickup, The FADER says, and takes a swipe at Shiesty’s father, who is also a defendant. Reaction has been mixed, The FADER reports, with online arguments about whether Gucci “snitched.” WFAA reported that the initial DOJ complaint made no mention of witness statements.
What prosecutors allege
Rolling Stone reported from the criminal complaint that Shiesty, born Lontrell Williams Jr., arranged a Jan. 10 meeting in Dallas after becoming upset with his recording contract. Prosecutors allege he and others traveled from Memphis, that a gun was pointed at Gucci, Radric Davis, and that he was forced to state he “released” the rapper from the deal. Nine defendants, including Shiesty, his father and the rapper Big30, are charged with kidnapping and conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and face a potential life sentence if convicted.

Evidence cited by the government, as listed by XXL, includes electronic monitoring data that places Shiesty at the studio in violation of his home detention, plus phone, rental car and bus records, surveillance footage and fingerprints. U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould said in a statement that the defendants “resorted to violence and intimidation to achieve their purported business objectives.”
What the court and defense said
A federal magistrate judge denied Shiesty bail on Wednesday (April 8). In her order, obtained by Rolling Stone, Judge Renée Harris Toliver wrote that “there is no condition or combination of conditions the court can impose in this case which will reasonably assure defendant’s appearance as required or the safety of the community or another person if released.” The judge noted that he was on home detention and did not have permission to be in Dallas.
His lawyer, Bradford Cohen, has disputed the case. “The FBI doesn’t take three months to arrest someone if they believe everything that was said,” he told Fox 4 News, adding that there is “no contract, this mystery contract” and no video, guns or jewelry. In a statement to XXL, Cohen said “it appears that there is a significant gap in the statements made by the government and the actual evidence.” Shiesty’s lawyers also called it a “he said, he said type of case,” per the FADER.
Why it matters
Gucci Mane runs 1017 Records, which signed Shiesty in 2021, according to the complaint as described by Rolling Stone. For now, the case is allegations, a detention order and dueling statements, and nobody has been convicted. It is one of several rap legal sagas this year, alongside Lil Durk’s murder-for-hire trial and Summer Walker’s fight with Interscope.
