Olivia Rodrigo made one record store in Tustin, California, very popular on Friday. Analog Music Shop got 500 limited-edition CD singles of her new song “Serena Joy,” three days before anyone else could hear it, and by Friday night they were gone. On Monday (Aug. 24) the song reached streaming services, announced with a photo of the lyrics and the caption “I love this song so much!!!!”
The shop is about eight miles from Great Park in Irvine, where Rodrigo's Daisy Chain Fields festival takes place on Aug. 29, and that is the point. Billboard reports that a portion of the song's net proceeds goes to the Daisy Chain Fields fund, which backs charities supporting women and girls. Pitchfork names Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Rights among the festival's beneficiaries.

What the song is
The title comes from a character in The Handmaid's Tale: Serena Joy, the commander's wife in Gilead, who in the Hulu series goes through a crisis of faith. Pitchfork hears a Peter Hook-style bass line running through the song, in keeping with her new album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, but says the subject moves from that record's close study of a relationship to wider questions of societal ignorance and complicity.

“Serena Joy” was recorded for the album but left off the final tracklist. Rodrigo said as much to Etalk in July, as quoted by Billboard.
The record was very much a chronicle of a relationship — beginning, middle and end. But I hope that it'll be a part of something else down the line.

Why it matters
The record-shop release is the kind of move Rodrigo has made before. Analog's post said she has “a track record of supporting record stores,” and Rolling Stone notes the CD was already going for upwards of $300 on eBay. The album it was cut from debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in June and includes the Hot 100 chart-topper “Drop Dead,” plus the top 10 hits “The Cure” and “Stupid Song,” per Billboard.
What's next: Daisy Chain Fields on Aug. 29, an all-women bill led by Rodrigo with Chappell Roan, Doechii, Mitski, Bikini Kill and Stevie Nicks among the acts, then the Unraveled Tour, which Pitchfork says carries openers including Wolf Alice and the Last Dinner Party. Her stance on technology got its own turn in October, when Rodrigo laid out a hard line on AI.
