Karol G put out her new album on Friday (Aug. 7), and the first thing to know is that it is blue. No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto, which translates to “I Don't Regret Feeling So Much,” is her intimate follow-up to the colorful Tropicoqueta, an album about sitting with sadness rather than dancing past it. Billboard calls the mood “Sad Bichota Season.”

What is it?

A 14-track breakup album, released on her own imprint, Bichota Records. Rolling Stone says the tracklist mirrors the stages of heartbreak, from the rage of the hyperpop opener “Te Llevas To” through the alt-perreo of “Bebiendo Lágrimas” to the contemplative “Final Feliz.” Complex maps it as anger, then depression, then acceptance on “Eclipse,” and says the album “automatically enters the heartbreak canon.”

Where did she make it?

Alone, mostly. Complex says it was recorded in isolation in Hawaii, and Rolling Stone says it was written partly on a solo trip there. Karol described the process, as quoted by Complex.

In making this album, I put a lot into being alone.

Her thesis about the title, from the same Elle interview via Billboard: “I'd rather suffer because I lived too much — because I loved too much, because I had too much fun — than to not have had those experiences, you know?” Rolling Stone adds that the album follows a year of challenges that included a highly public breakup from Feid, which Karol does not name on the record.

Who's on it?

The guest list is star-sized and mostly new to her. Billboard lists Drake on “Ahí,” Bruno Mars on “Still,” and Judeline and Rusowsky on “Bby Wow.” Oklou's syncopated beats sit under “Final Feliz,” Tainy returns, and her regular producers Edgar Barrera, Ovy On The Drums and Sky Rompiendo are in the room. “Después de Ti,” a dreamy ballad with Cigarettes After Sex guitarist Greg Gonzalez, premiered at her Coachella headlining set in April.

Gonzalez told Billboard that the song was recorded live in his home studio, and that “when she sent me the song it brought tears to my eyes.” On the Drake feature, Complex's Antonio Johri says it's arguably the best Spanish performance of his career, though he flags a calculated callback to “New Bestie.” “Still” is her first song fully in English, a synthy ’80s power ballad with Mars that Complex says might be the most surprising moment on the record.

Is there a single?

“Matadora,” a provocative perreo with explicit lyrics, per Billboard, debuted at No. 3 on the Hot Latin Songs chart dated Aug. 8. It is the loudest moment on a record that Rolling Stone calls sharply focused and as transparent as its title.

Why it matters

The album is a deliberate step away from a victory lap. Billboard says Tropicoqueta debuted at No. 1 on Top Latin Albums and No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and Rolling Stone describes the new one as what happens after the stadiums have been filled and the crown won. That includes a stretch of indie rock and experimental pop, and a Selena tribute in “Alguien Que Te Amaba,” co-written with Selena's composer Pete Astudillo.

What's next: she announced the record on July 29 at her Toronto tour stop, per Billboard, so the Tropitour continues with new songs. The record's two biggest guests later became part of a playful Drake, Bruno Mars and Karol G exchange, in which she says she coached Drake's Spanish on “Ahí.”
