Ariana Grande said she would need “an extra brain and four more arms” to put out a new album this summer, and then announced one anyway. On Tuesday (April 28), she revealed Petal, her eighth studio album, due July 31 on Republic. It lands in the middle of her first tour since 2019.
The cover is a close-up black-and-white portrait of Grande smiling, her hair falling across her face. She wrote and executive-produced the album with Ilya, the Swedish producer behind “Problem” and a collaborator since 2018’s Sweetener. In a press release, she described the record as
something that is full of life and growing through the cracks of something cold and hard and challenging.

She dropped no tracklist or first single at the time, Rolling Stone noted, but Grande had been laying clues since March: a flower emoji in her Instagram bio, photos in a recording studio.
Why it matters
Petal follows 2024’s Eternal Sunshine, which topped the Billboard 200 and spawned two Hot 100 No. 1s, “Yes, And?” and “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love).” In the time since, her work has been mostly on screen, as Glinda in Wicked and Wicked: For Good, which have grossed more than $1.2 billion combined, per Rolling Stone. This is a return to the day job, and one that will have to share a calendar with the Eternal Sunshine Tour, which opens June 6 in Oakland and ends Sept. 1 at London’s O2 Arena.

Her schedule is stacked. The comedy Focker-In-Law, with Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, is due in November, and she makes her West End debut in 2027 in a revival of Sunday in the Park with George, opposite Jonathan Bailey, Rolling Stone said.
How the rollout went
In a May 7 video, Grande said the album is “a little feral,” coming “from a place I’ve been maybe too shy or polite to tap into before,” Billboard reported. The lead single, “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” followed May 29, co-produced by Max Martin, Ilya and Grande. A month before release, she unveiled the full 12-song tracklist on the big screen at a tour stop in Inglewood, Calif.
Just before Petal arrived, Grande also sued unnamed hackers over stolen songs, photos and footage. On the tour, she told a Chicago crowd her break had been planned, not a reactive or impulsive thing. Petal came out on schedule and appeared among our best new music of July.
