Ariana Grande teased this all month, and the first line she gave away was a confession. “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” out Friday (May 29), is the lead single from Petal, her follow-up to Eternal Sunshine, and the Instagram post that previewed it carried four words: “cause i barely tried.”

The song was co-written and produced by Grande, the Swedish superproducer Ilya and Max Martin, according to Pitchfork, and arrives with a comic-book-inspired lyric video. Billboard describes the snippet released on May 18 as eerie, droplet-like sounds, with no vocals.

Watch the lyric video above. Petal is due July 31 on Republic and runs 12 tracks. Grande is executive producing it with Ilya, and she has described its mood in two ways. Earlier this month she called it “a little feral … definitely from a place I’ve been maybe too shy or polite to tap into before.” She also says the album is as “something that is full of life and growing through the cracks of something cold and hard and challenging.”

The record is a reset. Petal follows a run of screen work that includes her starring role in the Wicked films and Focker-in-Law, and a first major tour in years kicks off in June. Rolling Stone’s weekly roundup puts the single at the top of its list this week, noting that Grande “flips the script on fandom” for her comeback.

She isn’t the only pop star mid-rollout: Olivia Rodrigo’s tracklist arrived three days earlier. The rollout has been tightly styled. Billboard says the black-and-white photographs match “the demure, monochromatic aesthetic” of the visuals she has released for the album in recent weeks. Earlier in May, she also shared a previously unreleased Dangerous Woman outtake, “Knew Better Part Two.”

Next, she goes on the road. The Eternal Sunshine Tour begins in June, and Petal lands July 31. The single, one of May’s best new releases, sets the temperature: she’s done being polite.
