Olivia Rodrigo’s album has a song called “Maggots for Brains,” and it is not the only eye-catching title on it. On Tuesday (May 26), she posted the tracklist for You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love to Instagram, stitched in pink lettering that looks like embroidery next to a photo of her standing by a park swing at night.

Rodrigo told the New York Times’ Popcast that it is “the thesis statement of the album.” The album is out June 12 on Geffen Records, following 2023’s Guts and 2021’s Sour, both of which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

The title and the split are a deliberate swerve. Rolling Stone notes that Rodrigo built her reputation on four-letter album names, then changed course; she told Zane Lowe, “This is an album that I made when I was 22. The other albums I made when I was a teenager, and it just sort of felt like a natural progression to switch things up.” The purple era has also given way to pink.
The sad songs are the plan. In British Vogue, she said she wanted the album to be built on “sad love songs” and explained why: “I realized all my favorite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a tinge of fear or yearning in them.” She added, “I felt a similar way about falling in love, that the second I’m in a really great relationship, I’m gonna start feeling good about myself.”
Pitchfork’s staff, meanwhile, picked “The Cure” for its Selects playlist the same day, alongside the underground names fakemink and Bladee. “The Cure” is on our list of May’s best new music. The rest of the record is three weeks away.
