Tom Cruise’s big swing lost to a thriller about a ghostwriter, a husband and an FKA twigs song. Amazon MGM’s Verity opened at No. 1 over the weekend of Oct. 2–4 with an estimated $32.6 million in North America, more than four times the $8 million Digger made in fifth place, IBTimes reported.

It is the second-biggest opening for a Colleen Hoover adaptation, behind the roughly $50 million of 2024’s It Ends With Us, and about $30 million more came in overseas for a worldwide start near $62.6 million. IBTimes, citing Variety, put the opening audience at 78% women. Anne Hathaway plays Verity Crawford, a bestselling author, and Dakota Johnson plays Lowen, the writer hired to finish her books, per TheWrap.

The music is worth a look too. NME and TheWrap list eight songs in the film: FKA twigs’ “Girl Feels Good,” Oklou’s “Family and Friends,” Kali Uchis’ “Sugar! Honey! Love!” and The Marías’ “Back to Me,” alongside Curtis Mayfield’s “Close But Not Quite” and Benny Goodman’s “Body and Soul.” Twigs’ song comes from her 2025 album Eusexua, where Consequence heard an entrancing opening beat and a pulsing, dance-floor chorus.

Volker Bertelmann, the Oscar-winning composer of All Quiet on the Western Front, wrote the original score. Lakeshore Records put out the 25-track score album on Friday (Oct. 2), according to Film Music Reporter. Bertelmann told Gold Derby he based the music on a longer theme he composed right at the start, and that the film’s horror side gave him room to experiment.

I also really enjoyed the horror aspect of the film, which allowed me to experiment with a wide range of instruments.
