Timothée Chalamet and Hans Zimmer Drop “Desert Chant,” the First ‘Dune: Part Three’ Single

Timothée Chalamet now has a Hans Zimmer single. “Desert Chant,” the first release from Dune: Part Three, came out Tuesday (Oct. 20) on WaterTower Music, credited to Chalamet and Zimmer together, per Variety and Apple Music. The track begins with Chalamet humming and then ascends into the war chant, Variety writes, and it runs about two minutes. Zimmer, who scored the earlier films, wrote it. Listen below.

It isn’t Chalamet’s first turn behind a microphone on this film. When a trailer arrived in March, Zimmer revealed on Instagram that its Fremen chant was Chalamet’s too, “developed in collaboration with Denis and performed by my dear friend [Timothée Chalamet],” GamesRadar reported.

Zimmer has framed the job as a return to the novel that first lit his imagination as a teenager, and the one that later bonded him with director Denis Villeneuve. Variety quotes him:

When two teenagers are deeply moved by the same novel that lets their imagination run wild, so wild that the mysticism and philosophy that captured their souls never lets them go, they will inevitably meet and become creative brothers.

He added that working on Dune “would take me back into a time of being full of youthful imagination, where everything was true and the impossible was possible.”

Part Three adapts Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah and picks up 17 years after Part Two, with Chalamet’s Paul ruling as emperor and his mind growing clouded, per Variety. Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem and Anya Taylor-Joy return, and Robert Pattinson joins the cast.

Noah Kahan’s “Draw You Out” went first for the Hunger Games album on Oct. 2, and it was a ballad. This lead single is a chant. Zimmer also scored Euphoria’s third season, whose Western-leaning music we covered in April.

Variety calls “Desert Chant” the film’s first single. Dune: Part Three opens in theaters on Dec. 18.
