Most movies about pop stars give their lead a catalog of existing hits. Mother Mary built one from scratch. David Lowery’s A24 film, in which Anne Hathaway plays a superstar who turns up at her estranged designer’s door needing a dress for a comeback show, opened Friday (April 17), and so did its soundtrack, Mother Mary: Greatest Hits, a seven-song album on streamers and vinyl, per Billboard.
The songs come from a lineup most pop stars would envy: FKA twigs, Jack Antonoff and Charli xcx all worked on them. Hathaway co-wrote four, including “Holy Spirit,” “Burial” and “Cut Ties,” and twigs, who also appears in the film as a medium named Imogen, wrote the standout “My Mouth Is Lonely For You” with Tobias Jesso Jr. and Jeff Bhasker, among others. Daniel Hart composed the score.

Hathaway told Billboard it took two years to find Mother Mary’s sound, and that she kept going after the songs were filmed:
I worked on the sound for another year because I wasn’t happy with it

She says she called Lowery and Antonoff and asked to go back into the studio, and that they re-recorded everything. She also discovered she is a baritone: singing like Thom Yorke, she says, was the thing that felt good.
Twigs’ route in was less planned. She says she filmed her role first, not knowing she would help with the music, and sent Lowery two songs when he said he needed more. He picked “My Mouth Is Lonely for You” on the spot.
The film itself is dividing critics. The Hollywood Reporter’s review calls the core drama between Hathaway and Michaela Coel “pretentious and dull,” but says the “trance-like original EDM songs” are a vital component and that Hathaway’s heavily processed vocals still sell her as a legitimate music phenomenon. IndieWire’s review is far warmer, calling Lowery’s film “magnificently strange.” THR notes that Lowery has pointed to the film of Taylor Swift’s Reputation tour as a key inspiration for the concert scenes.

Lowery told Rolling Stone he is a longtime pop obsessive and has been working through the Billboard Top 100 for more than a decade. The film opened in limited release April 17 and goes wide April 24, the same week Michael arrives to dominate the music-on-screen conversation, and a few days after Euphoria brought its own soundtrack fight back to HBO.
