Hollywood’s awards season has two front-runners now, and they don’t even compete in the same category. At the 83rd Golden Globes on Sunday (Jan. 11), Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another won Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet won Best Picture (Drama), a split Variety attributes to a Globes quirk: unlike the Oscars, the Globes sort films by genre.
One Battle After Another led the film side with four trophies. Anderson took Best Director and Best Screenplay, and, per The Hollywood Reporter, producer Sara Murphy used the top-prize speech to thank the late Adam Somner, a producer on the film who died in 2024. Hamnet won two, including Best Actress in a Drama for Jessie Buckley.

The first award of the night became its most-shared moment. Teyana Taylor, who plays the revolutionary Perfidia Beverly Hills in the film, won Best Supporting Actress, her first Globe, and spoke straight to the girls watching:
To my Brown sisters and little brown girls watching tonight, our softness is not a liability. Our depth is not too much. Our light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we walk into. Our voices matter and our dreams deserve space.

Timothée Chalamet’s win for Marty Supreme (Best Actor, Musical or Comedy) came after four nominations without one. “I’d be lying if I said those moments didn’t make this moment that much sweeter,” he said, per Variety. Wagner Moura won Best Actor in a Drama for The Secret Agent, which also took Best Non-English Language Film, and Rose Byrne won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.
The music wins
The night’s music categories split the field. Sinners lost Best Director and Best Screenplay for Ryan Coogler, but Ludwig Göransson won Best Original Score and the film took the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award. Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters won Best Animated Film and Best Original Song for “Golden,” beating “I Lied to You” from Sinners, per Rolling Stone’s winners list.
The rest of the room
On television, The Pitt won Best Drama Series, The Studio won Best Comedy Series, and Adolescence took four prizes, including a win for 16-year-old Owen Cooper, the youngest ever in his category, Variety reported. The Globes also handed out their first podcast award, to Good Hang With Amy Poehler.
The presenters’ list read like a cross-section of our feed: IndieWire’s lineup included Charli xcx, LISA, Snoop Dogg and Miley Cyrus. Heated Rivalry stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie, who the Hollywood Reporter says were mobbed at the weekend’s “Golden Week” parties, presented Best Supporting Actress in a TV series, with a bit about UFC fighters as extra security. Variety also noted pins reading “Ice Out” and “Be Good” worn by guests including Mark Ruffalo and Wanda Sykes, in memory of Renée Macklin Good, who was killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis that week.
The Globes now point straight at the Oscar nominations, which land on Jan. 22.
