‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ Opens to $77 Million and $233.6 Million Worldwide, the First Female-Led Summer Kickoff

Twenty years on, Miranda Priestly beat the box-office forecast, bumped Michael to second and made the case that a legacy sequel can open summer without a Marvel movie.

Miranda Priestly just opened the summer. The Devil Wears Prada 2 debuted to $77 million in North America and $156.6 million overseas for a $233.6 million global opening, per Variety, the second-biggest worldwide start of 2026 behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($372.5 million). Deadline says no female-skewing film has ever led the first weekend of summer, a slot Marvel movies have mostly owned.

The domestic number is nearly triple the original’s $27.5 million opening in 2006. It is the fourth-best start of the year, behind Michael, Mario and Project Hail Mary, and the sequel has already earned 72% of the first film’s entire $326.5 million run. For Meryl Streep, The Hollywood Reporter says, it is the biggest domestic, international and global start of her career; for Emily Blunt, it is the best international and global debut.

The audience was overwhelmingly female. Billboard cites PostTrak exit polls putting women at about 76% of ticket buyers, and the film earned an A- CinemaScore. THR calls the result a reminder of “the buying power of women and teenage girls at the box office,” with $10 million in Thursday previews one of the best showings ever for a female-fueled film. The strongest day-one crowd was ages 25 to 34, while on Sunday, 66% of the audience was 35 and older.

The sequel reunites Streep, Anne Hathaway, Blunt and Stanley Tucci, plus director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna, two decades later: Hathaway’s Andy Sachs returns to Runway as a features editor under Streep’s editor-in-chief. Nostalgia helped. Nielsen data cited by Deadline and Billboard show streaming of the original jumped 428% from March to April, and the first film’s quotable lines (“gird your loins,” “that’s all”) have never gone away.

Fashion carried the campaign. Italy led all overseas markets with $16.6 million, and Deadline notes Milan has a major cameo in the film alongside Lady Gaga, whose songs with Doechii were previewed in a trailer. Disney’s teaser drew 185 million views in 24 hours, the biggest ever for a 20th Century Studios trailer, and theater chains held dress-up screenings.

It cost about $100 million, against the first film’s $35 million production budget, and Frankel told the AP that is mostly because of who’s in it:

As it turns out, you know, by the time you finish paying all the biggest movie stars in the world, you still end up with basically the same budget for making the movie as we did the first one.

David Frankel, director, to the Associated Press, Billboard

Behind it, Michael held remarkably well in its second weekend, down 44% to $54 million, for a global total of $423 million, per Billboard. The race for the summer is just starting, with Mortal Kombat II and The Mandalorian and Grogu up next. Deadline notes Avengers: Doomsday was originally due on this weekend before it was pushed, and Disney got Prada 2 ready to take the slot, which, for now, has paid off.
