Epic Games has never had a post like this one. On Sept. 27, Fortnite revealed that Five Nights at Freddy’s was joining the game for its Halloween event, Fortnitemares, with a 40-second trailer starring a bear with a microphone. The animatronics went live on Thursday (Oct. 1).

Fortnite dataminer HypeX flagged it as the game’s most-liked post ever, and Kotaku says it’s potentially the most-liked video game crossover promo in history. For scale, Rockstar’s August post revealing the first official Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay has 288,000 likes. The trailer also passed 1.7 million YouTube views.

The trailer still at the top is the whole pitch. Freddy Fazbear is on stage at the mic, Bonnie has the guitar, Chica holds the cupcake, and the stage lights do their best to sell a kids’ pizzeria. That’s the joke, and the dread.
What’s in it
According to Dread Central, citing Insider Gaming and HypeX, the crossover turns Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy into animatronic bosses in Battle Royale, with damaged “Withered” alternate styles for the skins. The reveal also features Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. A separate Five Nights at Freddy’s mode hadn’t been confirmed at the time.
On launch day, The Sixth Axis confirmed the outfits were live and show battle damage. They sit inside a bigger Fortnitemares lineup across Battle Royale, Horde Rush and Reload. Freddy Krueger is in, and you can hunt him down in the Nightmare Neighbourhood. More outfits roll out through October, from Hazbin Hotel and The Purge to Beetlejuice and Slender Man. Epic’s own gameplay trailer pitches it as a chance to face down the Five Nights at Freddy’s bosses.
Why it hit
The franchise isn’t short on momentum. Kotaku notes the 2023 film was a money-maker for Blumhouse and a sequel followed in 2025, and the studio recently signed the YouTuber whose theories helped build the fandom to a multi-project horror deal. On the series’ subreddit, Kotaku found the mood mostly positive, with fans calling the skins some of the most detailed official models of the animatronics yet.
What’s next, per The Sixth Axis: Horde Rush gets a “nitemare” theme starting Oct. 8, and Fortnite Reload revisits Nitemare Island, Stranger Things and Squid Grounds.
