Ye came home to Chicago, and he brought the old G.O.O.D. Music crew with him. On Thursday (Sept. 3), the rapper formerly known as Kanye West played the first of two sold-out shows at Soldier Field, and the night’s biggest moment was a public reunion with Big Sean, the Detroit rapper he signed in 2007.

“Had to bring my homie from the D out,” Ye told the crowd, per XXL, before Sean ran through “Clique” and his own “I Don’t Fuck With You.” 2 Chainz joined for “Mercy” and “Birthday Song,” Future came out for “Keep It Burnin’” and “Fuck Up Some Commas,” and Chicago’s Twista closed the guest run with “Overnight Celebrity” and “Slow Jamz,” as Pitchfork reports.

Sean stopped to say what the fans were thinking:

Chi-Town, I love you forever. Ye, I love you, bro, and I appreciate you.

Ye answered, “Love you, fam!” per Billboard, which counts more than 45 songs in just over two hours.

How they got here

The two fell out in 2021. Sean claimed on X that Ye owed him millions, in a post he later deleted, and Ye said on Drink Champs that signing Sean was the “worst thing I’ve ever done.” Rolling Stone adds that a fan leaked much of Sean’s unreleased album in 2024 after he seemed to take a dig at Ye in a freestyle. XXL ties the reunion to Ye’s recent efforts to apologize for past remarks and repair relationships. Billboard notes that he has faced backlash in recent years over antisemitic hate speech, and Pitchfork says shows on this tour in London, Marseille, Prague and Chorzów, Poland, have been cancelled over those remarks.

Why it matters

It was Ye’s first Chicago show since his Donda listening party at Soldier Field in 2021, nearly a five-year gap, and the biggest hometown moment of a U.S. return that began with a SoFi Stadium show in April, his first stateside concert in five years. Since then he has played Tampa, San Antonio and New Orleans. The stage was a massive globe, and he wore a new face mask with uneven glowing eyes, per XXL.

What’s next

Ye returns to Soldier Field on Friday (Sept. 4) for night two. Billboard reported earlier in the week that he has added U.S. stadium dates at Houston’s NRG Stadium on Oct. 31, AT&T Stadium in Dallas on Nov. 7 and State Farm Stadium in Phoenix on Nov. 21, with a show in Indonesia on Oct. 24 in between.
