Tierra Whack spent the week before her new mixtape asking critics to draft their apologies. She even shared a phone number where they could text them. Whack’s Museum is out Friday, June 19, on Juneteenth, and per Rolling Stone, it is about one thing: bars.
Her stance is plain in the rollout. “I never stopped believing in myself when you stopped believing in me,” she wrote when she called out detractors on social media, according to RS. The first of two singles, “Totem,” came Tuesday and runs under two minutes over a sparse beat, with Whack alone at the center of it. “But I was born a stepper, so I’ll take the stairs,” she raps. “Yeah, aura so bright, it could light arenas.”

Pitchfork calls both singles instant canon. “Totem” is the opp-thrashing one, where she laments needing “more rappers to step on” over a chime-laced beat. “Wax Paper,” a boom-bap track built around a toy piano, has a black-and-white video directed by Child and filmed in her hometown of Philadelphia, where the camera turns familiar streets into a monochrome maze, per Rolling Stone.
The tracklist leans into the brand. Titles like “Whack Job,” “Brazilian Wax,” “Wiggidy Whack,” “Candle Wax” and “Earwax” turn the project into a museum of her wordplay, and the rest of the 12 are “Godda,” “Siren,” “Queens Crown,” “Two Fifteen” and “Flowers.” HotNewHipHop says she handles the whole mixtape herself and that its production styles give it texture. It follows 2024’s World Wide Whack, which landed on several year-end lists, and Pitchfork notes it has been more than two years since we heard from her.

Whack has been busy elsewhere. Last month she sat alongside Oprah Winfrey at Amazon’s Upfront presentation to discuss Twitch’s cultural influence, made her voice-acting debut in the upcoming Invincible VS fighting game and appeared in last year’s Marlon Wayans-led film HIM.
What comes next is a busy, public month. On June 28 she was onstage at the BET Awards, trading “Fu-Gee-La” with Tems in Lauryn Hill’s Living Legend tribute. She is also on June’s best new music list.
