Remi Wolf spent five years making some of the busiest, most colorful pop around. Mud, her third album, out Friday (Oct. 9) on Island, clears the room. Its 11 songs lean on live-band takes, acoustic guitars and a touch of country twang, and on release day she announced the tour to match: a 2027 North American run that opens Feb. 23 at the Anthem in Washington, D.C., plays Radio City Music Hall four nights later and reaches Red Rocks on May 16.
She knows it's a swerve. “This album is a sonic sidestep, and there’s always fear in trying something new,” she told NME. She wrote around 130 songs for it with people she trusts, including her regular collaborator Jared Solomon, her longtime friend Jack DeMeo and her sister-in-law Gigi Grombacher, in rented houses in Big Bear and Joshua Tree, where she cooked for the whole crew. One song from the last Joshua Tree sessions, “Moon So High,” turned into a duet with John Mayer after she slid into his DMs, per Complex.

The songs carry more weight than the arrangements. Wolf told NME that she got sober again “just before I started writing the bulk of this album,” and that “Bottle,” “Champagne” and “Wine Drunk” are about coming to terms with being done drinking. Making the record, she told Billboard, was cleansing: “It was like wiping away the dirt.”
The visuals came out of her sketchbook. A psychic told her to paint and draw, Wolf said, and one oil-pastel drawing of inflatable tube men became the “Bottle” video, with nine of them stuck in a corral. Watch it below.
Critics heard the change. NME hears a more grown-up, toned-down sound with earthy textures. Pitchfork, which gave it a 7.3, ranks “Bottle” among the best songs she's ever written, though it calls the Mayer duet the album's weakest track. Before the tour, she plays two release-week shows billed as An Evening of Mud, at L.A.'s Fonda Theatre on Oct. 10 and New York's Webster Hall on Oct. 13.
The 2027 run covers 22 dates, from D.C. through Toronto's Massey Hall and Chicago's Salt Shed to a May leg out West that ends in Seattle on May 22. Emma Ogier opens the February and March shows, and Annabelle Dinda opens in May, according to Pitchfork.
