Mitski Locks the Door on Nothing’s About to Happen to Me, Her Haunted-House Album With Banjos and Possums

Her eighth record is built around a recluse in an unkempt house, with live-band country-folk, a Queen’s Gambit side project and the fame that followed “My Love Mine All Mine.”

Mitski’s eighth album is a record about staying inside. Nothing’s About to Happen to Me arrived Friday (Feb. 27), and she has described its central figure as “a reclusive woman in an unkempt house. Outside of her home, she is a deviant; inside of her home, she is free,” Rolling Stone reported.

The house is the whole conceit, and the album is made like one. Pitchfork notes that her main producer, Patrick Hyland, engineered it at home, and that her touring band from 2023’s The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We plays live in the room. The lyrics stay inside, too: the narrator is harried by stray cats, the dogs of dead girls and crowds eager to auction off her belongings, while possums live in the attic and mold takes the walls.

The FADER calls it her rockiest album since Puberty 2, though Pitchfork hears a continuation of the pastoral feel of its predecessor. The first single, “Where’s My Phone?,” is the album’s straight-ahead rocker, with a video staged like a Grey Gardens horror film in which her family is visited, or attacked, by a horde of nosy neighbors. Elsewhere, Rolling Stone hears banjo and accordion on the opener “In a Lake,” a countrypolitan setting of strings and steel guitar on “Cats,” and a pack of dogs holding a funeral vigil on “Charon’s Obol.”

It’s the most direct reading of what fame has done to her. The FADER points to a line in “In a Lake” as the cleanest summary: “I’ve tried very hard to be good / But when they think you’re bad, people act worse.” In 2023, “My Love Mine All Mine” became her breakthrough, reaching 1.8 billion Spotify streams on a wave of TikTok videos, per The FADER, and the answer to that attention is a record about shutting out the world.

The stage has crept into her work, too. Pitchfork notes that she is writing music and lyrics for a stage adaptation of The Queen’s Gambit, and the album’s gothic pantomime reflects it. It landed two weeks after Charli xcx’s Wuthering Heights, another record built as a single gothic world, and it’s one of February’s best new releases.
