Four months ago, Charli xcx sang that the dancefloor was dead and Madonna posted, apparently in reply, that if yours feels that way, you might be playing the wrong music. On Thursday (Sept. 24) the two stopped trading shots and made a record. “Danceteria Afterhours,” their first song together, is out now through Warner Records.

It reworks “Danceteria,” a track from Madonna's Confessions II, and is co-produced by Madonna, Andrew Watt, Cirkut and Stuart Price, Rolling Stone reports. The press release calls it “a celebration of the fearless beginnings and influences that shaped each artist’s singular paths.” In practice that means a swap of nightlife memories: Madonna's verses name-check her old Danceteria crowd, including Fab 5 Freddy, Basquiat and the Rock Steady Crew, while Charli remembers being “sweet 15 in a weird outfit” in London and, later, hanging out with A.G. Cook and Sophie in Los Angeles.

The backstory

The pairing has been teased for months. The speculation started when the two were seated together at the Saint Laurent menswear show in late June, Billboard notes, and it had a spark to work from. Charli's “Rock Music,” from Music, Fashion, Film, includes the much-quoted line “I think the dancefloor is dead,” and Madonna's May post read like a reply, per Pitchfork. Charli has long been openly admiring in return. Earlier this year she said of Madonna's 1991 documentary Truth or Dare, “Great choreo in that, also she’s just the one.”

Billboard says Madonna teased the remix on Instagram with a clip of the two dancing in a white studio, singing “Everyone here is a work of art.” The two also threw a Club Confessions party with Saint Laurent during Paris Fashion Week to build up to the release, Rolling Stone adds.

Why it matters

It's the latest in a run of additions to Confessions II. Madonna's last collaboration came last month, when she brought in Kylie Minogue for “Love Sensation (Afterhours Mix),” per Pitchfork. The album itself arrived in July at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield called it “her best album since the original Confessions 21 years ago.”

What's next: the song gets its live debut almost immediately. Madonna returns to the VMAs on Sunday, her first performance at the show in 23 years, and Confessions II leads the nominations. (Here's how that night went.) Charli also appears in our VMAs winners wrap.
