Lil Nas X’s comeback starts in a dance studio with a rehearsal that keeps going wrong. “World’s Greatest!,” released Thursday (Oct. 1), is his first new song of 2026, and the six-minute video that comes with it is built around one question: what happens when he stops fighting his own reflection?

Directed by Phillip Youmans and shot in Lil Nas X’s hometown of Atlanta, the film opens with him running choreography while his trainer says what everyone is thinking. “You keep doing the same thing,” the trainer tells him, according to Pitchfork. “You know what the problem is; you’re just not fixing it.” Watch it below.

The studio scenes cut against dramatized memories of his childhood: a boy trying on high-heeled boots, dozing off at church, pocketing candy from the corner store. Rolling Stone reads the turn as the moment his younger self shows up in the studio to mirror his moves, after which his stiff steps loosen into free-flowing ones. The video ends with a dedication: “In loving memory Tamikia Hill. Love u forever mommy.”

Hill, his mother, died in August. The song’s rollout began the day before release with a short clip of a voicemail she left him. “I just wanna say, I love you. Keep your head up. Continue to walk by faith, not by sight,” she says in it. “Let go and let God handle the rest.” Lil Nas X wrote that the phrase “‘Walk by faith, not by sight’ was my mom’s favorite phrase to say,” and that it “resonates with me more & more.”

Musically, it is a lift. Billboard calls it a “jubilant” single built on a classic ATL bounce beat, with a fast-strummed acoustic bed that it compares to OutKast’s “Hey Ya!” Lil Nas X wrote the song, and C. WRAY and Steve Rusch produced it. Near the end he nods to “Industry Baby” by repeating its line about the champions, and the hook is a plain declaration of confidence: “I’m a champion.”

The return has been gradual. In June, Lil Nas X told fans he had been in rehab for a few months after a bipolar diagnosis. “I’m doing much better, I’m feeling better, I’m creating freely, and there’s less fear in my heart,” he said then, per XXL. Pitchfork reports that in April a judge ruled that felony battery charges from a 2025 arrest in Los Angeles would be dismissed if he completed a two-year treatment program, with his diagnosis weighing in the decision.

The song follows the 2025 EP Days Before Dreamboy. His only studio album so far, 2021’s Montero, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and produced two Hot 100 No. 1s. Lil Nas X has not announced a follow-up. For another Atlanta artist moving through the city’s pop scene, see our profile of Bby Kell.
