June has a music thread running through the schedule. A vampire starts a rock band, Questlove makes a film about Earth, Wind & Fire, Baz Luhrmann restores Elvis in Vegas, and Pixar gets a new Taylor Swift song. It also has the month’s two big cinema bets, a Pixar sequel and a DC spinoff, plus a final season of The Bear and a dragon war.
We picked eight releases from the guides at TV Guide and Tom’s Guide, in release order. Dates are U.S.
EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert (Paramount+, June 3): Luhrmann goes back to Vegas
Baz Luhrmann’s concert film is built from lavishly restored footage of Elvis performing in Las Vegas in 1969 and the early ’70s, per Variety, and it shows the singer as an “ecstatic gyrating rock dynamo” rather than the kitsch caricature of the white-suit years. Variety critic Owen Gleiberman calls it “one of the most thrilling concert films you’ll ever see.”

The Vampire Lestat (AMC and AMC+, June 7): the rock tour
AMC’s gothic franchise changes narrators. After Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) publishes his book, Lestat (Sam Reid) decides to take control of the story, and the way he does it is to start a band and go on tour, Tom’s Guide says. TV Guide calls it “a very rock-and-roll continuation” of Interview with the Vampire, and says that whether it’s Season 3 of that show or Season 1 of this one, Lestat is running the show now.

Earth, Wind & Fire (HBO, June 7): Questlove’s band portrait
The documentary, whose full title is Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial vs. That’s the Weight of the World), tells the story of the band, TV Guide says, and is directed by Questlove, per The Movie Database. It promises access to the band’s visual, audio and written archives, with support from the estate of Maurice White, and its on-camera guests include Philip Bailey, Verdine White, Ralph Johnson, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, H.E.R. and Flea.

Disclosure Day (cinemas, June 12): Spielberg returns to aliens
Steven Spielberg’s new sci-fi film, from Universal and Amblin, follows a cybersecurity expert who becomes a whistleblower after learning secrets about aliens, and a meteorologist who has been seeing strange phenomena. David Koepp wrote the script, and the cast includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo. Variety puts its reported budget at $115 million.

Toy Story 5 (cinemas, June 19): toys versus tablet
Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen) and Jessie (Joan Cusack) face their toughest rival in Lilypad, a tablet voiced by Greta Lee that arrives in Bonnie’s life. Andrew Stanton directs, Randy Newman returns for his fifth Toy Story score, and Taylor Swift has written an original song for Jessie. Read our story on “I Knew It, I Knew You”.

House of the Dragon Season 3 (HBO, June 21): the Battle of the Gullet
After a largely battle-free second season, the Game of Thrones prequel opens with one of Westeros’s deadliest naval battles. Showrunner Ryan Condal, per Tom’s Guide citing Variety, called the premiere “arguably the craziest episode of television ever made.” The Greens and the Blacks keep fighting their civil war around it.

The Bear Season 5 (Hulu, June 25): last service
The Emmy-winning kitchen drama closes with an eight-episode final season that drops all at once. It picks up immediately after Carmy quits the food industry, leaving Sydney, Richie and Natalie to run a restaurant with money trouble and a storm bearing down on its Michelin-starred hopes.

Supergirl (cinemas, June 26): Milly Alcock’s Kara
Craig Gillespie directs the DC Studios space adventure in which Supergirl, with her dog Krypto, reluctantly joins an alien girl named Ruthye on a quest for vengeance. Milly Alcock plays Kara Zor-El. We covered how it fared in its opening weekend against Toy Story 5.
