The movie that taught a generation Shakespeare through Radiohead, The Cardigans and Garbage is going on the road. William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet Film in Concert shows Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film in full, dialogue and all, while a live ensemble plays the music in sync with it, per NME and Variety Australia.
The band is part of the pitch. The tour’s press release promises “rock and orchestral musicians with vocals, electronics, and a DJ,” NME reports. GEA Live, Disney Concerts and Luhrmann announced the tour for the film’s 30th anniversary, and Luhrmann explained in a statement why he thinks the film keeps finding crowds.
One of the greatest surprises over the past three decades has been watching Romeo + Juliet find new audiences again and again. That’s the enduring magic of Shakespeare and cinema.

The music is why this one works as a concert. The soundtrack carried Des’ree’s “Kissing You,” Garbage’s “#1 Crush,” Kym Mazelle’s “Young Hearts Run Free” and The Cardigans’ “Lovefool,” according to Variety Australia, and it peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, CNN reported in April. Radiohead’s “Exit Music (for a Film),” commissioned for the film, plays after the lovers die.
