Pokémon turned 30 on Friday (Feb. 27) and spent its birthday introducing the next generation. The Pokémon Company closed its Pokémon Day showcase with Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, the Generation 10 games, set for a worldwide release in 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, with a trailer that showed a brand-new tropical open world.

The games are developed by Game Freak, TechRadar notes, and, like earlier pairs, players pick one version and their main character wears different outfits in each. The Pokémon Company described the setup this way, via 80.lv:

These new titles feature an open world to explore, with beautiful, windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves.

Meet the starters

The three choices follow the Grass, Fire and Water tradition, as TechRadar lists them. Browt is the Bean Chick Pokémon, a Grass type that Shacknews describes as a grumpy little chickadee with a leaf brow on its forehead. Pombon is the Fire-type Puppy Pokémon, a fiery little Pomeranian by Shacknews’ eye, and Gecqua is the Water Gecko Pokémon, which GosuGamers says launches springy balls of water from its tail. Pikachu gets summer outfits too, GosuGamers adds, with two of them looking ready to take a holiday.

Switch 2 only, maybe

Several outlets, including 80.lv and Wccftech, report the games as the first mainline Pokémon releases exclusive to Switch 2, a leap past the original Switch after Pokémon Legends: Z-A shipped in 2025. TechRadar is more careful: The Pokémon Company hasn’t confirmed whether the games are exclusive or will also land on the original Switch. Wccftech says the unnamed region appears to be inspired by Southeast Asia, and guesses, based on past releases, a fall 2027 window that the company hasn’t confirmed.

The rest of the show

The presentation also marked the anniversary of Pokémon Red and Green in Japan, Wccftech notes, and filled in the near-term calendar: Pokémon Champions arrives in April, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness joins the Nintendo Classics library in March, and the Minecraft-like cozy game Pokémon Pokopia arrives on Switch 2 on March 5, per TechRadar. Nintendo’s other big franchise is headed to the big screen with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. In January, another long-awaited game finally arrived, and we covered the launch of Hytale.
