Kendrick Lamar is known for keeping a low profile, and for keeping his word. Romell Frazier Jr., a seven-year-old from Detroit, told local reporters earlier this year that Lamar was his favorite rapper and asked them if the “Humble” rapper could “come to my birthday.” The message reached Lamar, and now Complex reports that Romell and his family have been to Los Angeles for a visit.
Romell, who lost both arms in a dog attack in March, turned seven on July 31, and that day Kendrick called him. “I’m glad you reached out. I’m glad I got to talk to you,” the rapper told him, according to HotNewHipHop. “You’re giving us a whole lot of inspiration with how strong you are.” He then invited the family to visit.
The trip itself happened recently, and clips have begun to appear on social media, including one of Kendrick and others singing happy birthday to Romell. His mother called the weekend a “core memory” for him, HotNewHipHop reported. Josh Kendrick, a designer and Delta Air Lines employee who spent time with the family during their visit, shared a photo on Instagram and thanked the rapper.
Josh Kendrick@2js_officialhapa_InstagramThanks to @kendricklamar —for his kindness and generosity, and for being Romell’s favorite rapper—Romell and his entire family were flown out to Los Angeles for their very first visit. Somehow, I was lucky enough to have them all as my special guests and spend a little time with this beautiful family. Again, thank you, Kendrick, for your loving heart and for making a difference in people’s lives.

On the call, Kendrick also spoke to Romell’s mother. “It goes to show how great of a parent you are and the household you got for him,” he said, per HotNewHipHop. Lamar enjoys his superstardom from a reserved distance, popping out only on occasion, the outlet noted, which is part of why a moment like this travels. He also had a message for Romell himself: “You continue to be great, continue to keep that smile on your face, man. You got a beautiful life to live.”
Kendrick also appears on “How To Pray,” a feature on Dahi’s new album Black Boy (Alternative), HotNewHipHop noted. In September he would lend a verse to Jhené Aiko’s “So Good” and help sequence AZ Chike’s major-label debut.
