Art Basel’s flagship fair closed on Sunday (June 21) with the thing the market has lacked for two years: a strong first day that kept going. The headline sale was a $35 million Picasso at Hauser & Wirth, but the story of the week was how many other things sold too.
The 2026 edition ran at Messe Basel from June 18 to 21, after preview days on June 16 and 17. Art Basel says 90,000 visitors came across its VIP and public days, with 290 galleries from 43 countries and representatives from more than 270 museums and foundations.

The Big Sales
Hauser & Wirth’s Pablo Picasso, Le peintre et son modèle dans un paysage (1963), led the reported deals at an asking price of $35 million. The gallery also sold a Gerhard Richter for $20 million and a Louise Bourgeois for $2.5 million. “As strong a first day as we’ve ever had,” cofounder Iwan Wirth said in a statement, as ARTnews reported.
Gagosian sold a 1984 Willem de Kooning for a high seven-figure sum within the first hour. And at New York’s Gray gallery, two David Hockney works sold: the 2014 painting Studio Interior #2 for $8.5 million and an iPad drawing printed on paper for $650,000. Hockney, 88, died earlier this month.
What Dealers Said
ARTnews found plenty of optimism and one caveat. “It’s the best Art Basel in a couple of years,” gallerist Thaddaeus Ropac said. David Zwirner, whose gallery made 57 sales by the first afternoon, said the froth is gone from the young end of the market. “The speculative energy out of the young market has disappeared. That’s great news,” he said.
The caveat came from advisor Haily Widrig, who noted that most works on offer were either in the $2 million-and-up range or between $25,000 and $150,000. “The middle market seems to be kind of forgotten,” she told ARTnews.
New Ideas and Famous Visitors
The fair tried several new formats. Basel Exclusive had more than 190 main-sector galleries hold back a significant work to unveil at the preview. Unlimited, the sector for large-scale projects, was curated for the first time by MoMA PS1’s Ruba Katrib, and one of its pieces, an Isa Genzken installation, went to a European museum for €1.2 million. Thomas Bangalter, Julian Charrière and Rampa also staged Warehouse Artefacts, a day-long installation that turned into a rave on Saturday.
Ye was spotted at the fair on preview day. ARTnews said he was presumably there to support his wife, Bianca Censori, who stars in Vanessa Beecroft’s film installation Untitled (Izanami) in the Unlimited sector.
Why It Matters
Ropac noted that 2024 and 2025 “were not easy years for the art market,” so this fair is the clearest sign yet that the recovery that started with a strong May auction season is real. The question, as Widrig put it, is whether it reaches beyond the top of the market. Paris is next: Art Basel Paris returns in October, and the 2027 Basel fair is set for June 17 to 20, with preview days on June 15 and 16.
